First Nations Project Officer

Successful Tenancies Project | Tenants Queensland

Bring your community experience, research skills and commitment to social justice to work that helps improve the rental system for First Nations Queenslanders.

Tenants Queensland is looking for a First Nations Project Officer to join a funded research and policy initiative focused on improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander renters.

This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful change through practical work: listening to community perspectives, reviewing policies, developing resources and training materials, and building evidence that helps services respond more effectively.

The position

  • Location: Brisbane CBD office.
  • Employment: Full-time, fixed-term to 28 February 2027.
  • Classification: SCHADS Award Level 4.
  • Applications close: 16 October 2026.
  • Identified position: This role is for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

About Tenants Queensland

Tenants Queensland provides specialist advice and advocacy for people who rent their homes across Queensland, including people living in caravan parks and rooming accommodation. Its work combines direct support for renters with advocacy to improve tenancy laws, policies and services.

Through the Successful Tenancies Project, Tenants Queensland is working to address structural barriers experienced by First Nations people in the private rental sector and improve the way services and systems respond.

About the role

Working closely with the Project Leader and partner organisations, you will help deliver the Successful Tenancies Project through research, consultation, policy review and resource development.

Your work will contribute to more culturally responsive tenancy education and advice, stronger relationships with First Nations communities and service providers, and practical training for real estate agents and landlords.

The project also focuses on improving responses for First Nations renters facing tenancy breaches or involvement with the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT).

In this role, you will:

  • Engage with First Nations communities, service providers and First Nations-led organisations to understand priorities and identify gaps in tenancy support.
  • Research and review policies, learning programs and renter education materials to improve their cultural appropriateness and usefulness.
  • Help develop clear, practical factsheets and resources for First Nations renters.
  • Work with the Project Leader and a partner agency to develop cultural awareness training for real estate agents and landlords.
  • Contribute to the cultural capability of Tenants Queensland and the responsiveness of the Queensland Statewide Tenant Advice and Referral Service (QSTARS).
  • Support consultations, data collection and reporting that build evidence for better services and system change.
  • Provide tenancy advice after completing appropriate training.
  • Keep project administration and reporting organised to support delivery.

What you will bring

You will bring a commitment to social justice, strong communication skills and an understanding of equity, diversity and the varied needs of First Nations communities.

You will also need:

  • Extensive experience delivering community services, with the ability to coordinate a program and meet its objectives.
  • Experience supporting project delivery and contributing to practical outcomes.
  • An understanding of Queensland residential tenancy laws, housing policy and relevant sector issues, or the demonstrated ability to quickly develop this knowledge.
  • The ability to build respectful working relationships with people from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Confidence working independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to use a client information management system.

A university degree is desirable, but it is not essential. Relevant backgrounds may include community services, social work, social science, law or First Nations studies. If your experience aligns with the essential requirements, Tenants Queensland encourages you to consider applying.

A Queensland driver licence and the ability to travel when needed are also desirable.

Why consider this opportunity?

This role brings together community engagement, research and practical project work. You will have the opportunity to contribute to resources people can use, training that builds understanding, and evidence that informs improvements to tenancy services and policy.

If you want to apply your skills to fairer rental outcomes for First Nations Queenslanders, Tenants Queensland would like to hear from you.
